I'm not really sure how the system in BL1 is but in BL2 a gun is made up of these parts: body, barrel, stock (not on pistols), grip, scope, accessory. The the body determines what type of gun it is and what rarity it has. Then multiple different barrels, stocks, grips, scopes and accessories can spawn on it and except for scopes and stocks they change the stats on the weapon (however scopes affect zoom and stocks affect recoil). On the example of assault rifles a gun can have 6 different barrels, 5 different stocks, 5 grips, 5 scopes and 7 accessories. If you actually take a closer look at it the gun variety in BL2 isn't that big. A gun gets determined by it's body+barrel combination which gives you a total of around 300 guns in Borderlands 2.
However all of them can have dozens of different parts and accessories on them. Not quite, it's more complicated. The the body determines what type of gun it is and what rarity it has.Nope, since the game generates rarity earlier then type of weapon and it's manufacturer (so main body part). Then multiple different barrels, stocks, grips, scopes and accessories can spawn on it and except for scopes and stocks they change the stats on the weapon (however scopes affect zoom and stocks affect recoil).First, note that not all types of gun parts can spawn on a generated gun - some of the combination can't occur in the game (e.g. Longbow can't spawn with scope, Jakobs pistols can't spawn with Tediore grips, etc.) Next, scopes do influence rocket launchers' behaviour - see. Stocks on DAHL weaponry increase the amount of shots fired in single burst (DAHL body + DAHL stock = +1 shot per burst). On the example of assault rifles a gun can have 6 different barrels.Actually, there's 7 types of barrels (you probably missed the E-Tech barrel or the 2nd Vladof barrel).A gun gets determined by it's body+barrel combination which gives you a total of around 300 guns in Borderlands 2.Agreed with the body+barrel part, disagree with 300 part.

There has to be much more. First of all, I didn't recognize who's posting this, so one big duh on me.But back to the topic: I just tend to give more detailed answers, since they cover more stuff than easy explanations. I have a sense for such stuff and I don't hide with it. So if you know all this and just didn't want to confuse people like I do - then it's fine. One thing, though:A standard white to purple rarity AR can have 6 barrels, while a E-Tech rarity gun only has one aside from pistols. So E-tech is a different rarity then Purple? I always thought it was the same in terms of rarity, with the difference of generating a E-tech barrel (which forced the changes in stats, label and color in item card), instead of classic non-E-tech one on a generated Purple rarity weapon.

But I might be wrong there, it's been long since I've played BL. The two systems work very similarly. In Borderlands, a weapon is a set of parts.
Borderlands 2 Custom Weapon Maker
Different parts have different individual rarities that affect the chance of their appearing on any particular weapon. When a weapon spawns, the system generates the set of parts for the weapon, and uses the sum of the parts' rarities to determine the rarity- green, blue, whatever- of the weapon itself. The name of the weapon is calculated from the parts and attributes of the generated weapon, and can in turn further bias the weapon's attributes. In Borderlands 2, a weapon is also a set of parts. However, the rarity of the weapon is determined before the parts, and will constrain the parts generated to a certain extent, excluding certain parts at low rarities and mandating others at high. The name of the weapon is calculated solely from the parts and manufacturer on the weapon, and will not further bias the weapon's attributes. In practice, the two systems result in pretty similar variety. Borderlands had more wack (or wacky for that matter) Legendaries because nothing prevented a Legendary from spawning with wack parts, and its line guns were pretty similar between manufacturers- there was little difference between a Tediore and a Dahl other than small variations in weapon stats. Borderlands 2 has much greater diversity in line weapons, but its Legendaries work more consistently, because Legendaries have fixed barrels and because most of the wild-card effects (which Borderlands would implement via Thumper magazines, Twisted barrels, etc) now lie in the realm of manufacturer effects.
