A Soundfont a bank of sounds similar to those found on any sampler (think Kontakt, NNXT, etc.). Soundfonts were first in use on the old Creative Sound Blaster AWE32, which also included the Vienna SoundFont creation software. Many types of instrument sounds have been released as soundfonts, and E-mu even released banks from some of their sound modules (I have the Planet Phatt, Orbit, and Vintage Keys soundfont banks). There's a ton of free banks out there with some excellent sounds. Soundfonts are supported by most, if not all, software samplers.Hammersound has a ton of good sounds there for free. There's none better than SFZ+ Professional.

Sforzando is a free SFZ 2.0 compliant sample player. Advanced sample hobbyists now have a powerful tool to experiment and share instruments without relying on proprietary formats. Sforzando only has one instrument slot; no fancy UI, effects or mixers. Every tweak needs to be done at the SFZ file level, no cheating!sforzando is also a name given for a sudden change in music dynamics which, in musical notation, is represented by the “sfz” symbol. You can also drop SF2, DLS and acidized WAV files directly on the interface, and they will automatically get converted to SFZ 2.0, which you can then edit and tweak to your liking!sforzando is available at no cost.More info.
